This document will outline what your options for delivery of Digital Media are here at WCU. We offer Streaming, Podcasting and Web Based methods for delivery of digital content. 

Which method should I use?

There is no easy answer to this question, but here are some rules of thumb.

• Is the work you are showing copyrighted? Then it needs to be Streamed.
• Do you want to embed the content in a WebCat Course? Then probably web based is your best bet.
• Do you want your students to be able to see the content anywhere, including on iPods? Then you might want to look at podcasting.
• If you are concerned about students with Dial-up, video files are going to be very difficult to deliver, web-based will be better than streaming however.

Streaming

What it is for
Streaming video is used when you want to broadcast live video or when you want to prevent someone from downloading the content for 

copyright reasons. 

Where do you put it
All streaming content at WCU needs to be put on the ustream server. Accounts for this server can be requested at http://podcast.wcu.edu or by emailing Neil Torda

What file format do I use
Streaming video needs to be saved as a hinted Quicktime h.264 file. Directions to do this are available at http://wiki2.wcu.edu/groups/dm

Podcasting

What it is for
Podcasting is a way to deliver video, audio or PDF content via subscription model like a magazine or newspaper. Content is downloaded

to the end users computer and can be put on other devices like iPods or Zunes.  

Where do you put it
There are several options for podcasting. You can use iTunes U, Wiki’s or Blogs with podcasting capabilities. WCU offers all of these services. Contact Neil Torda or Laura Chapman for more information or see http://wiki2.wcu.edu/groups/dm

What file format do I use
The recommended format is a hinted Quicktime h.264 movie because this file can be used in multiple locations.

Web Based

What it is for
To show files that are not Quicktime based (WMV, Flash). You must provide a link to the content inside of a web page for it to work consistently for all users.

Where do you put it
There are a number of Web servers available for content. media.wcu.edu & paws.wcu.edu are both options. More information is available at http://wiki2.wcu.edu/groups/dm

What file format do I use
We recommend that you use hinted quicktime h.264 video because it can be used in the most places. However, you can use any format for web based delivery. We do not recommend using AVI or WMV because these formats are not compatible with all computers and systems used at WCU.
