Using an HP Scanjet 7650 for OCR in the sandbox

The Windows PC that was attached to the Document Scanner in the Faculty Sandbox has been replaced with a new 24" iMac. Here are the procedures for using the document scanner with this new iMac.

How to Use the Document Scanner with Automatic Feed Attachment

  1. Make sure scanner is turned on by clicking the powerbutton on the far left of the scanner control area.
  2. Place your originals face up in the feeder as illustrated on the feeder
  3. Press the Scan Text button on the far left side of the buttons, just right of the power button.
  4. When you press this button, the software will automatically launch and you will be asked to choose a destination. Click OK.Choose destination message box
  5. Choose Preferences from the HP Scan Pro menu: 
  6. If your documents are double sided, click the check box next to Scan Both Sides when using duplex feeder. If the originals are one sided, uncheck this box. Click OK.
  7. Choose what you want to scan to: A good option is Microsoft Word. Then click the accept button.
  8. The scanner will pull in your document and scan it, when it reaches the end, it will ask if there are any more pages to be scanned. OCR (optical character recognition) will then be performed and the document will be opened in whatever program you selected in step 7.
